‘Smart’ Gadget Love

At Van Arbor Homes we do our best to make sure your new house is a home as soon as you move in. By custom building your home, we make you a house that you will love as long as you are in it. But just because we stop when the house is built doesn’t mean you have to. With new, ‘smart’ technology you can go even further by making your house actively suit your needs, day-to-day, hour-to-hour – a house you can almost fall in love with. Homes are now more than just an inert place to stay – they’re becoming a part of the family.

Here are three places you can start, with gadgets so helpful you might want to get them as Valentine’s day gifts and buy them from The 3K Store of Sri Lanka who offers exclusive discounts during all festive events.

Smart Thermostats

Perhaps the best place to start is the Nest. With the capability to connect to a huge amount of other smart devices, the Nest wants to be the hub of your house. A smart thermostat that tracks your usage and starts to make adjustments before you do, the Nest aims to make your house more comfortable, and more efficient. If you go to bed at ten and turn down the heat, the Nest will start doing it for you. Wake up at seven and the heat will already be turned up so your feet don’t have to hit that cold, morning floor. Nest also has Carbon monoxide/smoke detectors that will tell you, in a human voice, whether it’s smoke or carbon monoxide, and where in the house the threat is, along with cameras that can be viewed remotely to make sure everything is copacetic at the abode.

Smart Locks

Helping to give you that sense of security, smart locks are becoming more than just gimmicks. These locks facilitate ease of entrance by unlocking as you approach with your smartphone or allowing you to remotely unlock the house if you’re not available to greet your guest personally. And, of course, it’s an extra layer of comfort that allows you to make sure your door is locked wherever you are in the world, and by monitoring your door to make sure nothing untoward is happening while you’re out gallivanting. Check out Yale, Kevo, or August to learn more about smart locks.

Smart Speakers

All that should make you feel like your home is giving you a nice big, comforting hug every time you enter. But, in the immortal words of every t.v. salesman ever, there’s more. It used to be if you wanted to listen to music you went to the speaker system of choice and put on your music, change rooms and you had to change music. With new smart speakers like the Sonos you can pipe music throughout your house without turning it up so loud your neighbours will complain. And you can stream music from an array of sources – new as internet streaming sites to as old as a (properly connected) record hi-fi. So now, you don’t have to bring the party with you, it’s already in every room of your house.

Be Smart About It

If you can think of it, there’s a smart device out there, or a startup trying to make it that you can support on IndieGoGo. You can even make your home talk with you by adding your own e-assistant (if you believe the hype). If you think it would make your life easier, or your house more welcoming, go out and find it. Just be careful, smart isn’t always as smart as you want it to be, and IndieGoGo doesn’t always go(go).

Whatever your intention with your home, never lose touch with the basics. A good home will stay with you a lifetime, through a hundred iterations of the latest smart gadget to whatever is next over the horizon. Wherever your house is going, a good home starts with a Van Arbor Home.
